The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II may well be among the cheapest lenses currently on the industry, but its optics belie its lowly price. As befits a classic normal prime lens, it is incredibly sharp when stopped down (specially inside centre), shows minimal chromatic aberration, and has fairly reduced distortion; APS-C users will also advantage from extremely reduced vignetting. In most regards it comes incredibly close indeed to its significantly additional high priced larger brother, the EF 50mm F1.4 USM, lagging marginally behind in corner sharpness at any certain aperture.
