The Olympics, in thier present form, has only been around for about 150 years. They have been around in one form or another for several hundred years. When the Olympics were being promoted in the late 1800s, the Marathon was one of the races added to the games. It was named after a battle in which Athens fought off Persia, and a story tells of a runner who traveled to tell the story.
