On September 12, 1362, Pope Innocent VI died. Pope Innocent was the fifth of a line of popes that ruled from outside Rome. These seven popes, called the Avignon Popes, ruled from France instead. The quality of these popes were varied, but Pope Innocent was considered one of the better ones. He took over the church from his predecessor who had left the church with financial troubles.
