In the 1400s, Christopher Columbus thought the world was smaller than it actually was, and thought China was much bigger. He set off to find a new shipping route to Japan and China. Instead of finding a new route, he found a New World. And America was discovered. This mistake earned him recognition at the time, and recognition from those who would inhabit the New World.
