Starting about the second week of Kindergarten by daughter was given the opportunity to take home what her teacher called Story Bags or Take Home Literacy Bags. She loved them so much that I started making Literacy Bags for my classroom. They are theme related bags with books, activities, and journals to take home and share with family members. I soon realized how much better these literacy bags were compared to traditional homework. In this lens I will describe one of the first literacy bags that I created when doing a Frog Unit Study with my Kindergarten and First Grade Class. We began our unit study by brainstorming everything we knew about frogs. We then read a couple of books about frogs before going out to the Frog Pond to check the accuracy of our sources. When it was time to choose a literacy bag to take home for the week, the children could hardly wait to choose their homework.Literacy Bags make homework so much fun that your children will be begging to take their homework home.

8 Vote(s)

Each year we eagerly await the arrival of spring to listen to the Spring Peeper and anticipate the discovery of frog eggs in the vernal pools. Frogs lay their eggs in pools, ponds, and puddles. As snow melts, low lying areas fill with water and frogs start looking for a place to lay their eggs.On our farm in Royalton we find frog eggs in the vernal pools of the woods, in pools near the water fall, and in setbacks along the banks of the river.Come search with us for frog eggs...Photo Credit: Frog Spawnfrom Florida Center for Instructional Technology.

6 Vote(s)

Math has always been easy for me but it wasn't until I started taking classes to get my teaching certificate that I came to truly love math. Both my mom and dad loved to play card and board games. They taught my sister and I many mathematical concepts while playing these games without even realizing it. Puzzles and patterns, statistics and probability were daily conversations. Then came school. Math was nothing but numbers written on paper. Easy to do but very boring and seemingly unrelated to life. Breezing through each worksheet, page of math problem and even finishing the 7th grade math book mid-year, math became a hated subject to be put aside as quickly as possible.I vowed that the day I graduated from high school would be the last day I ever took a math class. I succeeded in that goal all through college but when I wanted to get my Elementary Teaching Certificate the state of Vermont had other ideas. So I signed up for a summer class in teaching math.

9 Vote(s)
