I do a lot of online social bookmarking. When I write an article or find a great article or news online, I generally go to my favorite social bookmarking sites and bookmark them so that I can retrieve these links later from anywhere and also to share my finds and my work with my friends online on these social bookmarking sites.
So I can bookmark anything online and can retrieve my bookmark from anywhere in the world just by logging in to my preferred social bookmark. That is already a great advantage.
I make lots of friends online on these sites and I enjoy reading the stuff they have bookmarked and shared. I wouldn't have learnt so much or even know about so many sites if I had not found them on the social bookmarking sites. Most of these sites and articles does not rank well on the search engines so I would not have found them past the third page - i don't go beyond the third page of the search results.
The biggest benefit I find is that I discover new site based on personal recommendation. People bookmark their own stuff and also the stuff they really like and find useful. The search result from a social bookmarking site will be very different from the search result of a search engine. Social bookmarking site are people powered and you will find personal likes and recommendations on any particular topic. People will only bookmark what they like - great finds. Their personal recommendation is usually the best info I need to visit the site for work or leisure related web visits.
