Lowell Observatory And Life On Mars (Hill)

Posted by Ramkitten 802 days ago (http://www.squidoo.com)
The first time I heard of Lowell Observatory was when my future husband, Steve, brought me to his hometown of Flagstaff, Arizona in 1995, shortly after we'd met. On that trip--an extended second date--we visited his childhood friend, Charlie, whose home was perched on the edge of Mars Hill at the site of the Observatory, with a perfect view of the San Francisco Peaks from the back porch. Charlie's dad was an astronomer, and Charlie and Steve had literally grown up at Lowell. While visiting Charlie, I thought how neat it must be to live on Mars Hill. Little did I know then that, eight years later, Steve would become Lowell Observatory's fourth instrument-maker in more than 100 years. And, in November, 2008, we moved into a home on that historic hill just a few hundred yards from Charlie's former house and the rest of the Observatory, reducing my husband's commute to about five minutes on foot.
